A straightforward, uncontested divorce typically takes six to seven months from application to final order.

Apply for Your Divorce
Since April 2022, divorce no longer requires a reason for ending the marriage. You, or you and your spouse together, apply through the online divorce portal, confirming the marriage has broken down.
Applicant and Respondent
If you start the process, you are the applicant. If your spouse starts it, you are the respondent. You can also apply jointly, both named as applicants, if you agree. There is an application fee of £612.
Conditional and Final Order
After a 20-week reflection period, you can apply for a conditional order, formally the decree nisi. Once granted, you wait six weeks before applying for the final order, formerly the conditional order, which legally ends the marriage.
Financial settlements and child arrangements are negotiated alongside the divorce process. Where you reach agreement, we draft a consent order so it becomes binding. Where you cannot agree, on finances or on child arrangements, we can represent you in court.

What is no-fault divorce, and how does it work in England and Wales?
Since April 2022, you no longer need to give a reason or blame your spouse for the marriage ending. You confirm the marriage has broken down irretrievably, apply online alone or jointly, then wait 20 weeks before applying for a conditional order and a further six weeks before the final order.
How long does it take to get a divorce?
A straightforward, uncontested divorce through the online portal usually takes around six to seven months from application to final order. Contested divorces, or those involving disputed finances or child arrangements, can take considerably longer, sometimes well over a year to resolve.
How much does a divorce cost?
The current court fee for a divorce application is £612. Your total cost depends on the complexity of your case, whether it is contested, and whether financial matters are in dispute. We offer fixed-fee options for straightforward, uncontested divorce cases.
Can I get a divorce if my spouse does not agree?
Yes. Under no-fault divorce, your spouse cannot contest the divorce simply because they disagree with it. There are very limited grounds to dispute an application, such as questions over jurisdiction or the legal validity of the marriage itself in law.
What is the difference between divorce and judicial separation?
Judicial separation ends your legal obligations to each other without ending the marriage itself. Some people choose it for religious reasons, or because they have not been married long enough to qualify for divorce. It does not allow you to remarry.
