Have you got Complaints About a Solicitor? Are you Unhappy with your Solicitor?

Choosing the right solicitor is key and can affect whether you win or lose a case. We are often approached by clients who are not happy with the service they are being provided with by their current solicitors. This is unfortunate as it goes without saying that your solicitor should provide a high standard of service and client care and you should have trust and confidence in them.

What Should I Expect from My Solicitor?

As solicitors, we are regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) and we have extensive obligations to our clients which include:

  • discussing whether the potential outcomes of the case justify the expense or risk involved
  • clearly explaining our charges before we start the case
  • discussing options for how fees will be paid, including exploring whether any insurance policies will cover the claim

Nevertheless, we regularly come across cases where clients have been offered insufficient or ill-explained advice or even no advice at all regarding the law or possible outcomes of the case. Other typical problems have involved clients being left stunned by their solicitors’ fees as they had not been given enough information about their charges before the case started, or clients losing confidence in their solicitors because they have failed to reply to correspondence or keep them updated on their case.

Can I Switch Solicitors if I am Not Satisfied with Their Service?

If you have complaints about a solicitor, are unhappy with your current level of service, or have doubts as to whether they will achieve the best possible outcome for you, it is possible to change solicitors and switch to a more trusted firm. However, the earlier in your case you decide to change solicitors, the easier it will be.

Where you have nagging doubts about your solicitor, you may want to get a second opinion or a review of their advice. In these circumstances, you can instruct another solicitor without having to tell your current solicitor about it if you don’t want to.
