A new study from Witan Solicitors has revealed the most coveted law firms young lawyers want to work for.
For many aspiring lawyers, securing a training contract isn’t just a job—it’s a launchpad. In some cases, the firm you start with can shape your entire career, from the cases you work on to the salary you command years down the line. While some law firms are flooded with applications from graduates at top universities desperate to land a spot, others struggle to attract talent. But which law firms are young lawyers fighting to be a part of?
To uncover the latest dream law firms, we analysed Google search data, examining the firms people are curious about across the UK. Instead of just focusing on traditional job searches like ‘[law firm] + careers’, we also analysed searches related to salaries, training days, application processes, interview questions and reviews from other employees.
Top 5 Dream Law Firms
The research revealed that DLA Piper is the most sought-after firm among job seekers, with an impressive 7,190 job-related searches per month. This makes sense given that the firm is known for its success in handling complex, high-end legal matters, giving trainees exposure to cases that make national headlines. Plus, with flexible working arrangements, well-being initiatives, and tailored career development programmes, employees can thrive both professionally and personally.
Following closely behind is Linklaters (6,880 searches), a Magic Circle firm that consistently scores highly for training in the Legal Cheek Trainee and Junior Lawyer Survey. While the firm’s high standards make it a demanding place to work, they provide an impressive NQ salary of £150,000, so it’s easy to see why it is a top destination for ambitious lawyers looking to launch their careers.
Pinsent Masons (6,620 searches) secures third place. With first-year trainee salaries starting at £49,500 in London, rising to £54,000 in the second year, the firm ensures that its trainees are well compensated. Newly qualified solicitors in London can expect a salary of £97,000, with additional benefits such as PGDL and SQE grants.
Also ranking highly is Irwin Mitchell (5,710 searches). The firm provides a range of benefits, including flexible working options, annual performance-related bonuses, and a variety of health and well-being perks like critical illness cover and a cash plan for everyday health costs.
Rounding off the top 5 is international firm White & Case (5,700 searches). The firm offers competitive salaries, with first-year trainees earning £62,000 and second-year trainees £67,000, while newly qualified solicitors can expect a substantial £175,000. Not to mention, they provide generous grants for legal study.
