Initiating a Petition
If you are the one initiating the petition, you are the Petitioner.
If you have been issued a divorce petition initiated by your spouse, you are referred to as the Respondent in the case.

What are the acceptable grounds for divorce in the UK?
In essence, to have grounds to file for a divorce you have to have a reason to believe that the relationship is irreparably broken down. Reasons could include, infidelity, separation for five years or more, legal separation for at least two years and unreasonable behaviour, such as violence, harassment or abuse to name a few.
How long does it take to get a divorce?
A straightforward divorce without any complications can take between 6 and 12 months.
How long do I have to contest a divorce?
You can contest a divorce within 14 days from being served the divorce petition.
What is the difference between Judicial Separation and Divorce?
Judicial Separation is used as a solution when a couple doesn’t want a formal divorce, usually, due to religious reasons. The main difference is that Judicial Separation doesn’t give you the right to remarry.
