The success of shows like Netflix’s You and Dahmer has sparked debates about romanticising criminals - fictional or not. But regardless of the moral concerns, some people can look past the crimes of those like Jeffery Dahmer and Ted Bundy. This form of attraction is commonly referred to as hybristophilia.
Witan Solicitors has uncovered the most attractive criminals who are infamous for their unlawful acts or were convicted of crimes. Read on to discover the criminals people are most attracted to.
Summary
The Top 5 Most Attractive Criminals
1. Martha Stewart
While she may not be the biggest criminal in the world, Martha Stewart achieved an impressive score of 7.5 out of 10. Her brief stint in federal prison in 2005 helped to cement her position as an internet icon. Unlike many other celebrities, her arrest boosted her reputation after she took the fall and refused to give the authorities the names of the other people involved in her case.
2. Jeffrey Dahmer
Unsurprisingly, in second place is Jeffrey Dagmer, with a score of 6.4 out of 10 for attractiveness. Like many other male serial killers, Dahmer amassed a notable fanbase, receiving countless love letters from female admirers.
3. Ted Budy
With a score of 6.2, Ted Bundy takes the third spot. Like Dahmer, despite his violent crimes, the serial killer had a slew of female fans. Bundy’s good looks, intelligence and superficial charm not only allowed him to gain the trust of his victims but also led to a legion of fans protesting his innocence.
4. Richard Ramirez
In the fourth spot is Richard Ramirez, with a score of 5.3 out of 10. The serial killer allegedly had around 15 girlfriends during his time behind bars, including one whom he ended up marrying. After 11 years of writing love letters, Doreen Lioy, former editor of Tiger Beat, married Ramirez in San Quentin State Prison in 1996.
5. Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel
Rounding off the top 5 is Benjamin Siegel, with a score of 4.9. The American mobster’s violent reputation earned him the nickname Bugsy, as in the American phrase 'crazy as a bedbug'. In the 1930s, Siegel became a fixture in the Hollywood social scene, dating a string of actresses who were charmed by his looks. Despite being a brutal gangster boss, Siegel reportedly exercised obsessively and even wore a chinstrap in bed to prevent early signs of ageing.
Methodology
A seed list of notable criminals was used to gather search data for the following keywords on Google: “[criminal’s name] + hot” and “[criminal’s name] + sexy”. Images of each criminal were then gathered to calculate their facial proportions using the golden ratio. A computer vision algorithm was used to pinpoint facial landmarks and estimate the golden ratio for each image. The search data analytics along with golden ratio approximations and height were used to create an index score out of 10.
